Phone insurance – the key points

Here are a few viewpoints relating to phone insurance:

  • phone insurance is part of what some people would call ‘gadget insurance ‘- a broad category of policies that provides cover for things such as, cameras, laptops, ipads and PDAs etc;
  • if you have a range of such gadgets and you wish to insure them, it may be more cost-effective to do so through a single insurance provider, as you may receive discounts for multiple policies – something that may be worth having in times of economic uncertainty;
  • a classic phone cover policy will typically provide cover for events such as, loss (typically an optional extra), theft, accidental damage or destruction and breakdowns outside of the manufacturer’s warranty period;
  • some insurance providers may be able to guarantee you a 48-hour replacement of your phone (starting from the point your claim is approved);
  • if your phone is stolen then you may find yourself needing to pay for any calls made on it in between the time it is stolen and the time you were able to disconnect the service – some policies may provide what’s called ‘airtime abuse’ cover that will reimburse you for any such costs incurred;
  • if you travel outside of the UK with your phone, you may appreciate the global cover that is included, as standard, by some insurance providers;
  • some insurance of this nature may exclude theft if it arose when your phone was anywhere other than on your person – it may be worth searching for policy that provides ‘unattended theft’ (providing the phone was somewhere securely locked away at the time);
  • a similar point may arise with damage/destruction due to liquids, as some policies may exclude this from the protection – so, searching for a policy that includes liquid damage cover, may be advisable;
  • you may find that policies may require that you report any theft to the police within less than 24 hours of its occurrence, if your claim is to be successful;
  • it is worth noting that some policies of this type may exclude damage caused while you were trying to fit accessories to your phone or whilst attempting to ‘fix it’ once it has gone wrong – the providers of phone insurance may typically regard the repair of, or adjustments to, the internal workings, as being a job for a specialist.
