iphone 5 insurance and the rumour mill

Talking about iphone 5 insurance may seem to be a little premature, given that this particular device does not even exist yet!

In fact, that is not entirely accurate, as it almost certainly does exist in various labs and development shops. Current rumours are forecasting a release date of anywhere between June and September/October 2011.

That, however, is about the only thing that the rumour mill currently agrees upon.

Just about every other aspect of the putative device remains open to wild and highly divergent speculation.

There is hardly a single component where rumour consensus exists and different people are forecasting radically different things for:

  • the processor;
  • the casing (colour, size and material);
  • its functional capabilities in just about every single area;
  • the size and resolution of its screen;
  • its pricing (for example, there continue to be ongoing rumours of an iphone nano – though it is not clear how these relate to rumours about the iphone 5 itself).

So, if little concrete appears to be known, what has this got to do with iphone 5 insurance?

There are some things that it may be possible to very safely predict about the iphone 5:

  • it will be a relatively valuable item;
  • like all electronic devices, it may be prone to breakdowns outside of the manufacturers warranty period;
  • ingenious as Apple no doubt are, it seems unlikely that they will be able to perfect a device that is incapable of being stolen or accidentally damaged/destroyed – nor are they likely to have a clever App that is going to prevent you losing your iphone.

That is why, even though it has not yet been released, keeping iphone 5 insurance in mind just might be a good idea.

Cover for this type of device is typically considered part of what some insurance providers may call ‘gadget insurance’. There are policies within that heading to cover devices such as laptop computers, cameras and PDAs etc.

Some insurance providers may even be able to guarantee you a replacement iphone within 48 hours of your claim being approved.

The specific protection provided by an iphone insurance policy may vary from one insurance provider to another but the above forms of risk may well be covered, thereby providing you with peace of mind (loss cover may be available as an optional extra).

Of course, as with any insurance product, terms and conditions, exclusions and limitations will apply and you may wish to read these carefully to ensure that you understand them.

Discussing iphone 5 insurance is never likely to be as interesting as trying to predict just what Apple are likely to do next, however, it may be a little more practical!
