Insure your iphone for peace of mind

Lovers of gadgets may have one phone in mind, the iphone 3gs. Some gadget lovers may believe it is the ultimate phone, you are able to make and receive calls, listen to music, play videos and surf the net, but typically none of this comes cheap. An iphone 3gs can cost many hundreds of pounds, whereas a standard mobile phone doing little else but allowing the owner to make calls and send messages may be picked up for a lot less. When paying out for such an expensive phone you may also wish to insure your iphone to give you peace of mind.

Choices for taking out insurance

You have two options when you wish to insure your iphone:

  • purchasing a policy at the time of buying the phone in the shop with the provider;
  • insuring your iphone independently, after comparing costs (although you will need to do this within a certain timeframe following the purchase of your iphone).

There are some key differences between the two approaches:

  • you may have to pay the annual premium upfront when you buy it with your phone where as when you look for insurance independently you are often able to choose to pay for your insurance monthly, which may be easier on the pocket;
  • you may not have the chance to read the small print of the insurance policy when you choose to insure your iphone in the shop and therefore you may not be fully aware of what cover you have or what exclusions and restrictions apply to the policy; researching the policy independently will allow you to spend time reading through the details and terms of the policy you are considering to ensure there are no nasty surprises in store at a later stage if you need to make a claim;
  • you may be able to tailor the policy when buying independently and choose just the cover you need where as there may be less options available when buying direct with your iphone.

Events you may insurance your iphone against

There are typically certain events you are protected against when you insure your iphone, depending on the terms and conditions of the provider. These may or may not include the following:

  • theft of the phone from your person, home, or vehicle;
  • accidental damage to your iphone;
  • mechanical or electrical breakdown of your iphone, following expiration of the warranty.

When taking out an insurance policy to protect your iphone check out the different policies to ensure that, you choose the policy for your phone based on the correct model. Insurance providers typically offer insurance policies for the:

  • iphone 3g – 8GB;
  • iphone 3gs -16GB;
  • iphone 3gs – 32GB.

The cost for insurance will of course reflect on the model of the iphone due to the complexity of the gadget and the cost of the phone. Also, note that exclusions and limitations will generally apply and terms and conditions as well as price and cover will vary from provider to provider. Therefore, it is important to fully understand the terms of the policy to ensure that you are buying the cover that is most suitable for your needs.

When you insure your iphone, you may have protection against such things as dropping your phone and it breaking, having your phone snatched from your hand, or failure of your phone after its warranty has expired.

You may also have all of this protection wherever you travel in the world if your policy provides worldwide insurance. Some policies have an excess applicable which is an amount that you will need to contribute towards the costs of repair or replacements should you need to make a claim. Additionally in reviewing the cover, find out what the response time is for a repair or replacement if the worst were to happen and you needed to claim on your policy.
